What Is a Surgical Needle?
Surgical needles are needles that are used during surgical procedures. They are primarily used for sutures or stitching up surgical sites after an operation, or for stitching wounds closed to stop external bleeding and prevent contamination of an injured area.
There are various types and sizes of surgical needles. They may have straight shapes or curves, for example, and can come in forms like eye needles, spring eye needles, and atraumatic needles. They are also usually made of stainless steel for the best durability and safety.
These needles may also have a range of different features, like blunt points, lancet points, or micro points, and each type of surgical needle has its pros and cons.
Surgical needles are used on a daily basis by surgeons and doctors. They’re small but vital tools when it comes to carrying out operations and conducting surgical procedures, helping to close wounds and stitch operation sites together.

How Does a Surgical Needle Work?
Surgical needs are most commonly used for stitching wounds or surgical sites. First, the appropriate suture thread will need to be selected and attached to the surgical need. The needle can then be thread through the skin and pulled through the other side, guiding the suture with it. This process is then repeated around the wound or surgical site until it is sealed and stitched together completely.
Surgical Needle Sizes
Surgical needles tend to be very small and narrow, due to the way in which they are used, as they often have to be inserted into the skin multiple times and narrower needles work best at causing the least amount of damage and bleeding. These needles typically range from 20 to 27 G in terms of their diameter, with lengths of 2 to 4".
Surgical Needle Types
We can divide surgical needles into a range of sub-types or categories, based on their shape and design. Straight surgical needles, for example, are completely straight in design, while 1/2 circle surgical needles have a semi-circular shape and spoon needles have a spoon-like curve to them.
Surgical Needle Uses
The main use of surgical needles is to stitch the skin of a patient back together if it has opened due to an accident, injury, or surgical operation. For example, if an incision has been made in an area of the chest during an operation, surgical needles will be used to stitch the area back together, with the aid of suture thread, once the operation has been completed.
