What is an 18g Needle Used For?
Larger than many needle sizes, the 18 gauge needle is useful for a blood infusion or a push of IV fluids when time is of the essence. It is also a commonly used needle for CT PE testing and other protocols requiring a larger-gauged needle.

Gauge Size and Needle Length Specifications
The Birmingham gauge is a sizing system originally developed for wire, but it also serves as a standard measurement scale for medical needles. Within the system, each specific needle gauge has an inner and outer diameter and a wall thickness measurement expressed in both inches and millimeters. These measurements can vary slightly within a specific range. Within each gauge, needles come in various lengths. 18 gauge needles meet the following measurements:
- Outer diameter: 0.0500 in. (variation range 0.0005 in.) or 1.270 mm (variation range 0.013 mm)
- Inner diameter: 0.0330 in. (variation range 0.0015) or 0.838 mm (variation range 0.038 mm)
- Wall thickness: 0.0085 in. (variation range 0.0005) or 0.216 mm (variation range 0.013 mm)
- Average lengths: 0.5 to 3.5 inches
Needle sizes have corresponding color coding from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Called ISO6009, color coding for needles makes it easier to recognize the gauge at a glance. The Luer lock, a plastic connector that secures the needle to the syringe, is tinted accordingly. The 18 gauge needles have a pink Luer lock.
A syringe propels the fluids through the hollow 18 gauge needle into the bloodstream. The outer casing of the syringe has measurement lines to ensure the correct dosage while the inner plunger pushes the fluid up through the needle and the opening it has made in the skin. Syringes come in different sizes to accommodate different doses of medicine or fluids.
