What Is a Pulmonary Artery Catheter?

A pulmonary artery catheter is one that is designed to be inserted into one of the pulmonary arteries. The pulmonary arteries are among the largest and most significant arteries in the body, taking deoxygenated blood directly away from the right side of the heart towards the lungs.

Like other kinds of catheters, pulmonary artery catheters are long, thin, hollow tubes. They have an inflatable balloon section at one end. So, once the catheter has been inserted, this balloon can be inflated in order to hold the catheter in position inside the artery and prevent it from falling out.

Inside the catheter, there are two channels or lumens. One of the lumens is used to inflate the balloon, while the other can be used to take blood samples from the artery and areas around the heart. These types of catheters may be used to detect heart failure or track the performance of the heart in patients with different conditions or receiving different drugs.

How Does a Pulmonary Artery Catheter Work?

Pulmonary artery catheters are used exclusively in a process called pulmonary artery catheterization, or PAC for short. During this process, the patient will be given anesthesia and may be put to sleep. An incision site will then be chosen, which could be in the arm, neck, groin, or under the collarbone. The site will be numbed and a needle will be used to enter the vessel. A wire will then be inserted into the vessel, which will help to guide the catheter along through the vessel towards the right atrium of the heart. The balloon can then be inflated and the catheter pushed further through the right ventricle and out into a pulmonary artery.

Pulmonary Artery Catheter Sizes

Just like other catheters that are designed to be inserted into blood vessels, pulmonary artery catheters need to be quite narrow. They usually have diameters ranging from 4 Fr to 7 Fr. They also need to be longer than most other kinds of catheters, as they often need to travel quite a long distance inside the body to reach the pulmonary artery.

Pulmonary Artery Catheter Types

Most pulmonary artery catheters are very similar to one another. The only ways in which they may differ are in terms of size and in terms of the number of lumens. Some pulmonary artery catheters have five lumens, while others have six. Other numbers may be available, but five and six-lumen catheters are the most common varieties.

Pulmonary Artery Catheter Uses

Pulmonary artery catheters are used for diagnostic purposes to check and monitor bloodflow around the heart. There are many cases in which this might be necessary, such as when patients are suffering from heart failure or congenital heart disease, for example. Other use cases include patients with fat embolism, complicated heart attacks, high blood pressure around the lungs, and sepsis.
