What Is a Catheter Bag?

A catheter bag is a flexible pouch that connects to a catheter and is used for collecting and storing urine as it drains from the bladder and flows through the catheter. Catheter bags are specially designed from safe materials like medical-grade vinyl to be hygienic and safe to use. They also feature markers on the inside to measure and display how much urine is inside and how much space is left in the bag at any one time.

These bags may also be known as urine drainage bags or urine collection bags. They can be used in various situations, such as in patients with urinary incontinence or those with urinary retention problems, as well as during or after surgery. Some are designed to be positioned on a bedside stand, while urine leg bags or catheter leg bags are made to be attached to a user's leg for everyday usage.

How Does a Catheter Bag Work?

Urine or catheter bags work in a very simple way. They have one opening at the base. A catheter or tube is attached to this opening and to the patient. Urine can then flow freely through the catheter and into the catheter bag. When the bag is full, it can be safely detached from the catheter, emptied, and then reattached, ready to be used again.

Catheter Bag Sizes

There are various sizes of catheter bags. Leg bags, which are designed to be used throughout the day and emptied regularly, are available in sizes ranging from 250ml to 750ml. The bedside catheter bags are usually much larger, as they're made to collect greater quantities of urine through the night before needing to be emptied. They can be up to 3L in size.

Catheter Bag Types

There are two primary types of catheter bags: leg bags and beside bags. Catheter leg bags are designed to be attached to a user's leg via straps and concealed under clothing. They can be used throughout the day. Beside bags are typically larger and used throughout the night or in situations where patients are hospitalized or bed-ridden.

Catheter Bag Uses

The main use of catheter bags is to collect urine. They can be used in various situations. People who suffer from incontinence (the inability to control urination) can use these bags to safely and freely urinate at any time of day or night. Those with issues like urinary retention can also use these bags. They are also used for hospitalized patients who may be unable to leave their beds or find it difficult to move around without assistance.
