What Is an Insemination Catheter?

Insemination catheters are catheters that can be used during a process known as intrauterine insemination, or IUI, which is when a washed semen sample is injected into a female patient's cervix, via an insemination catheter, to aid with fertilization.

These catheters consist of a single-lumen tube, which may have either a straight or rounded tip to suit patients of different needs and may be soft, semi-rigid, or firm. Holes are placed around the sides of the tip to allow the semen to be distributed widely around the cervix for maximal dispersion and the best chance of conception.

The base of the insemination catheter is flared, designed to seal the cervix while the catheter is in use to prevent backflow of the semen and increase the likelihood of success for the procedure.

An insemination catheter can be a very valuable tool in helping women or couples who are experiencing fertility issues to achieve conception.

How Does an Insemination Catheter Work?

After a semen sample has been collected from a male, it will be "washed", which means removing the seminal fluid and concentrating the sperm. Once this is done, a speculum will be inserted into the woman's vagina to open access to the cervix. The insemination catheter can then be pushed into the cervix and further into the uterus, and the washed semen sample can then be injected.

Insemination Catheter Sizes

Given the way in which insemination catheters are used, they are designed to be very narrow, with diameters ranging from just 1 to 2mm. This is so that the catheter can be inserted into a very narrow space with minimal risk of damaging the interior of the cervix or uterus.

Insemination Catheter Types

There are a few different types of insemination catheter, and they can vary in terms of the shape of the tip and the flexibility of the tube itself. Straight tip insemination catheters have a straight tip which is the most commonly-used kind, while rounded or coudé catheters have a curved or bent tip that may aid in insertion in some patients. Different levels of rigidity, from soft to firm, can also be found to suit different patients with different needs.

Insemination Catheter Uses

Insemination catheters are used during IUI. IUI can be useful for many women and couples who are finding it difficult to get pregnant in a range of situations. They can be used, for example, for women who have cervical abnormalities or stenosis, as well as couples in which the male has problems with erections or ejaculation. They can also be used for third-party reproduction for single women, lesbian couples, or other couples who may require this service.
