What Is an Airway Exchange Catheter?

An airway exchange catheter is a type of catheter used in certain surgeries and medical procedures. It is a long, thin, flexible tube which may have straight or rounded tips at the end. Typically, there are markings along the tube to help with determining the depth of insertion.

Airway exchange catheters are available in a range of sizes and lengths to suit different patients, including both children and adults. They may have a hollow central lumen space with side holes and a connector to attach an oxygen tube. They may also feature other adaptors and connections for additional tubes.

These catheters are most commonly used when changing or removing endotracheal tubes, or ETTs. They are usually inserted through the existing ETT before it is removed. The catheter then remains in place to provide oxygen to the patient manually or automatically. These catheters are therefore very important pieces of medical equipment, recognized by the American Society of Anesthesiologists.

How Does an Airway Exchange Catheter Work?

Usually, an airway exchange catheter will be inserted into an endotracheal tube that has been inserted into a patient's trachea to assist with breathing and delivering oxygen to the lungs. The catheter enters through the endotracheal tube, providing an additional conduit for the delivery of oxygen. This is usually done when the endotracheal tube needs to be changed. The catheter ensures that the flow of oxygen is not interrupted while the exchange takes place.

Airway Exchange Catheter Sizes

Airway exchange catheters are available in a wide range of sizes. They are typically measured according to the French gauge system, with common sizes including 5 Fr, 10 Fr, and 15 Fr. They may also have varying lengths, typically ranging from 500mm or 50cm up to 700mm or 70cm. Different sizes and lengths may be required depending on the age and size of the patient in question.

Airway Exchange Catheter Types

Many different types of airway exchange catheters have been used in the past. Most of the catheters used nowadays follow a set standard design and are created by one of a small number of suppliers, including Cook Critical Care and CardioMed Supplies. They typically have centimeter depth markings along the side, straight or rounded tips, and a flexible plastic body.

Airway Exchange Catheter Uses

The primary use of airway exchange catheters is to increase safety when changing or removing endotracheal tubes. The catheters are small and thin enough to be placed through the tubes before they are removed, reducing the risk of complications or dangers to the patient during the exchange process.

Airway Exchange Catheter Suppliers

Cook Medical, Sheridan Catheter Corporation, and CardioMed Supplies are some of the key suppliers of airway exchange catheters.
