What Is a Drainage Catheter?

A drainage catheter is a special kind of catheter that is used to drain excess fluid from the body. Like other catheters, it consists of a long, hollow tube, through which fluid can flow. At one end, it can be connected to a receptacle, like a catheter bag. At the other end, a narrow tip is inserted into the body for fluid collection.

Like other kinds of catheters, drainage catheters are available in different sizes to suit patients of different needs. There are also different brands responsible for producing these kinds of catheters, but they all tend to follow the same basic blueprint.

Drainage catheters can be very important in certain medical situations. If a patient has an abscess, for example, in which fluid has collected and become infected, a drainage catheter will be a key tool used by doctors and nurses to drain the fluid from the abscess.

How Does a Drainage Catheter Work?

Drainage catheters work in a relatively simple way, but still need to be handled with care and are usually inserted by interventional radiologists. The area where the catheter is set to be inserted will need to be numbed first with some anesthetic. Once the anesthetic takes effect, the catheter can be inserted, usually with the aid of fluoroscopy, ultrasound, or CT scans. Once in place, the catheter is stitched to the skin and left in position as fluid drains out via the tube and into the collection bag.

Drainage Catheter Sizes

Like other kinds of catheter, drainage catheters are typically measured using the French gauge system, which tells us the diameter of each catheter tube. Sizes for drainage catheters range from as low as 5 Fr up to around 10 Fr, on average.

Drainage Catheter Types

There is only one main type of drainage catheter. Different brands make these catheters, like C. R. Bard and Medline, but they all follow the same basic design. All drainage catheters therefore consist of a long hollow tube with a connection at one end for the bag to be attached.

Drainage Catheter Uses

The main function of a drainage catheter is to drain fluid out of the body. These catheters can therefore be used in many situations where fluid collections or build-ups have formed around the body. They are commonly used to treat abscesses, which is when fluid builds up around an infected area. The drainage catheter is able to drain away the excess fluid to help the patient heal or make way for other procedures.

Carefusion, Medline, C. R. Bard, and Neochild are some of the leading suppliers.
