What Is a Tuohy Needle?
A Tuohy needle, which may also be referred to as an epidural needle, is a specific type of needle which is used for epidural procedures. During an epidural, this needle will be inserted into the epidural space around the spinal cord and used for the insertion of epidural catheters.
Tuohy needles were named after the American anesthesiologist, Edward Boyce Tuohy. Tuohy didn’t actually invent the needles - that honor belongs to a Seattle dentist called Ralph L. Huber - but he did help to popularize them across North America and beyond.

How Does a Tuohy Needle Work?
As mentioned above, Tuohy needles are used for epidural procedures, in which an epidural catheter is inserted into the epidural space around the spinal cord and used to administer anesthesia into the body. The Tuohy needle is the tool that penetrates the skin and creates a passageway for the catheter to pass into. Usually, the patient will need to be seated or lying on their side to begin with. The injection site can then be cleaned and numbed before the needle is pushed into the body. The catheter follows the needle into the epidural space, and then the needle retracts back out of the body, rather than remaining inside.
Tuohy Needle Sizes
Tuohy needles typically range from between 3 and 5” in length, on average, although other sizes are available. In terms of gauge, common measurements for these needles range from 18 gauge to 22 gauge.
Tuohy Needle Types
A Tuohy needle is a specific kind of spinal needle with a unique and distinct design and shape. However, there are various other kinds of spinal and epidural needles that are very similar to Tuohy needles, such as Hustead needles, Crawford needles, Weiss needles, and Sprotte Spezial needles.
