What is an Ostomy?

An ostomy is a surgery that creates a hole and it allows stool or urine to evacuate your body through the belly. It creates a path so that stool and urine can exit the patient’s body. An ostomy is a procedure that reroutes how bodily waste leaves the human body.

The opening made by the surgeon is called a “stoma” and it is placed on the abdomen. In most cases, a pouch is worn over the opening to gather all the waste. For some patients, it is possible to have a continent diversion, so the pouch is no longer needed. This is a life-saving surgery that will allow the patient to evacuate bodily waste through the abdomen into a pouch or also known as an ostomy bag hanging outside of the body, or an internal pouch done for continent diversion procedures.

Types of Ostomy Bags

There are many types of ostomy bags available in the market and preferences may vary. Each bag has a different feature and choosing the right one will enhance the wellness and comfort of the patient. Ostomy bags work well in different situations and if the patient lives an active lifestyle, it might be useful to own different ostomy bags for each activity.

One-Piece Ostomy Bags

One-piece ostomy bags are designed with a combined skin barrier which makes it a must to replace the entire system with every replacement. They are a great option for people seeking a more discreet ostomy bag. However, one-piece ostomy bags cause more discomfort than a two-piece ostomy bag. This is a good choice for active individuals or athletes.

Two-Piece Ostomy Bags

Two-piece ostomy bags are usually considered more comfortable and cause less irritation. The skin barrier stays in place for 2-4 days without needing a change and the bag can be removed without displacing the skin barrier. Two-piece ostomy bags are separate items so it’s easy to change the bags swiftly.

Drainable Ostomy Bags

A drainable ostomy bag is designed to allow the user to empty the bag and reuse it and is usually a good pick for people who live busy lives and need more convenience when handling their ostomy bag.

Closed-End Ostomy Bags

These are single use ostomy bags and need to be disposed of right after each use. When the bag gets filled it needs to be discarded immediately otherwise it will leak and potentially lead to infections.

Pre-Cut Ostomy Bags

Pre-Cut ostomy bags have a pre-cut opening and it’s a risky choice if you are unsure of the size of your stoma.

Cut-to-Fit Ostomy Bags

This is a safer option to prevent leakage. The skin barrier is measured and cut according to the size of the stoma. This type of bag is good because it fits comfortably, and it reduces skin irritation.

Convex Ostomy Bags vs. Flat Ostomy Bags

Usually, ostomy bags are flat with an adhesive on the back that keeps it in position. Convex bags have a more protruding look and better adapts to skin wrinkles and scars.

Pediatric Ostomy Bags

These are smaller bags carefully made for children. Some adults also use this one to achieve a more discreet look.
