What Is a Suction Catheter?

A suction catheter is a type of catheter that is exclusively used for sucking out fluids or gasses from the body. These catheters are usually connected to some kind of suction machine or collection canister in order to function correctly and are used in a variety of medical procedures.

Like other kinds of catheter, suction catheters consist of a long, hollow, flexible or semi-flexible tube. It usually has one narrow end for insertion into the patient, with the other end having valves or connectors for connecting the catheter to aspirators or other devices.

There are many potential uses for suction catheters, such as tracheal suctioning, which is when thick mucus and secretions are sucked out of the trachea of a patient to help them breathe more easily or after undergoing respiratory treatments or procedures. They can also be used by dentists to prevent aspiration in patients who are unconscious and at risk of aspiration pneumonia or other problems.

How Does a Suction Catheter Work?

A suction catheter is quite a simple medical tool. It features a long, hollow channel, or lumen, inside, through which fluids or gases can be sucked out. First, the suction catheter will need to be connected to some kind of suction machine or canister. It can then be inserted into the patient's body, typically through the trachea. The suction machine can then be activated and controlled to draw mucus, saliva, and other fluids out of the trachea and upper airway.

Suction Catheter Sizes

Suction catheters are available in a wide range of sizes to suit different patients and procedures. They may need to be quite thick in order to draw out thick, viscous fluids like heavy mucus, so their diameters can range from as low as 10 Fr up to 20 Fr or higher, in some cases. They can also vary in length, according to the needs of the patient.

Suction Catheter Types

Most suction catheters are quite similar in terms of their design and production, but there can be some differences. Standard suction catheters consist of a tube and valve or connector. There are also closed system suction catheters which feature their own isolated cleaning chamber in order to reduce the risk of contamination. These catheters may also have different amounts of lumens.

Suction Catheter Uses

The main function of suction catheters is to suck out mucus and other fluids from the trachea and upper parts of the respiratory system. They are commonly used to draw out mucus in patients who suffer from coughing and respiratory difficulties, as well as those with respiratory diseases. They can also be used in the dental field for patients undergoing dental treatment, maintaining patient airways in hospitals during surgery, and managing chronic breathing conditions.

Suction Catheter Suppliers

Covidien, Carefusion, Medsource International, and Medline are some of the leading suppliers of suction catheters.
