What Is a Condom Catheter?

A condom catheter, as the name implies, is a specific kind of catheter that is worn like a condom around the penis. They are designed for use in male patients only and offer a more comfortable alternative to other forms of catheters, like typical Foley catheters, due to the fact that they don't need to be inserted into the urethra.

A condom catheter is simply placed around the exterior of the penis and is used entirely on an external basis, without any insertion into the body. This allows urine to pass as normal via the urethra and then out into the condom catheter, where it is collected and guided to a container or receptacle, like a catheter bag, which is usually strapped to the leg of the patient.

Condom catheters offer various benefits, such as the fact that they are more comfortable and non-invasive. They also don't restrict a patient's movement as much as an internal catheter, and they can be used comfortably at home or in day-to-day life by the patient, but they are only recommended for certain cases and situations.

How Does a Condom Catheter Work?

The way in which condom catheters work is very simple. Just like a condom, these external catheters are worn over the outside of the penis and collect urine as it drains out of the bladder and passes through the patient's urethra. They are attached to a collection bag, usually stuck to the patient's leg, which can be emptied when it is full.

Condom Catheter Sizes

Various different sizes of condom catheter are available to suit different sizes of penis, ranging from smaller sizes to larger sizes. The size needs to be chosen with great care, as those that are too small could be restrictive or uncomfortable, while those that are overly large may not fit correctly and could lead to misfunction of the catheter.

  • Small (22 mm - 25 mm)
  • Medium (26 mm – 30 mm
  • Intermediate (31 mm – 35 mm)
  • Large (36 mm – 39 mm)

Condom Catheter Types

There is only one main type of condom catheter. Different brands produce these catheters, but they all adhere to the same basic design, with a cap at one end that fits around the penis, a catheter tube for the passage or flow or urine, and a collection bag at the other end where the urine is collected.

Condom Catheter Uses

It's important to note that condom catheters are only used in certain situations. They may be recommended for male patients who are suffering from conditions like urinary incontinence, an overactive bladder, dementia, or mobility problems that make it hard to use the toilet in the usual way. In situations where patients have urinary retention or blockages in the urethra, internal catheters like Foley catheters are more commonly used.
