What Is an Infusion Catheter?

An infusion catheter, as the name implies, is a specific type of catheter used for infusion therapy, or the delivery of fluids and medications intravenously via an IV line.

Like other kinds of catheters, infusion catheters consist of a long, hollow, semi-flexible tube. At one end, the tube can be connected to an IV bag, like a gravity IV bag or pressure IV bag. At the other end, the infusion catheter is usually either connected to a cannula to provide access into the body or fed directly into the body below the skin and into a vein.

Infusion catheters are an essential part of the IV process. They’re used around the world in many hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare centers as a part of infusion therapy.

These catheters can allow for the flow of a wide range of fluids into the body, including the likes of saline solution, sugar solutions, and medications for the treatment of various illnesses.

How Does an Infusion Catheter Work?

The way in which infusion catheters work depends on the specific type of infusion catheter being used. Many of these catheters are tunneled, which means that they are inserted under the skin and directly into the vein to deliver fluids and medications. Others are connected outside of the skin to a cannula which has already been inserted under the skin with the aid of an IV needle. Once in position, the infusion catheter will be connected to an IV bag and allow for the flow of fluids from the bag into the body.

Infusion Catheter Sizes

Like other kinds of catheters, infusion catheters are available in a broad range of sizes. They often need to be quite long in order to reach from the IV bag to the patient's body and may have varying diameters to suit different uses.

Infusion Catheter Types

We can divide infusion catheters into various types or categories. For example, one of the most common varieties is the tunneled infusion catheter. This catheter is tunneled into the body, under the skin, directly into a vein. Non-tunneled infusion catheters do not need to be inserted under the skin. There are also single-lumen infusion catheters, which have just one channel, or lumen, as well as dual lumen catheters, which have a secondary lumen inside.

Infusion Catheter Uses

Infusion catheters are used for connecting IV lines and providing patients with infusion therapy. This is needed in a wide range of situations to provide fluids and medications to the patient’s body.
