What Is a Suture?
Harvard Medical School defines a suture as a sterile thread used to close incisions after surgery or to repair wounds and injuries. According to Healthline, sutures are available in a variety of configurations:
- Absorbable sutures are specifically designed to break down naturally in your body after a period of time.
- Non-absorbable materials, by contrast, provide a stronger connection for deeper wounds. They must be removed after the need for these sutures has passed.
- Monofilament sutures are ideally suited for stitching delicate tissues because they consist of a single strand or thread.
- Braided or multifilament sutures are usually stronger and more durable than monofilament sutures. They are more difficult to apply, however, and may increase the risk of infection in some patients.
- Natural and synthetic materials are both used to fabricate sutures.
- A survey published in Dermatologic Surgery found that more than half of the superficial sutures used in the dermatology field were constructed of nylon, with polypropylene sutures running a close second. The Ethilon suture is used in a wide range of medical applications and offers real benefits for patients and caregivers alike.
How Are Ethilon Sutures Used?
The Ethilon suture is used in a wide range of wound closure and post-surgery applications. An overview available from research database ScienceDirect notes that an Ethilon suture can be used for closing superficial wounds on the skin, for managing cosmetic surgery procedures, for repairing surgical incisions on the hands and feet and for certain spinal column procedures.
Ethilon Suture Types
Ethilon sutures are available in an array of different configurations. Some of the most common absorbable and Ethilon suture types available from CIA Medical include the following:
- Vicryl sutures are dissolvable sutures used in soft tissue repairs and composed of synthetic materials.
- Monocryl sutures are often used to close wounds to the face and are fully absorbable within a few weeks of initial use.
- Chromic sutures are often used to repair any perineal damage after the birth process. A study published in Obstetrics & Gynecology indicates that chromic gut sutures offer similar performance to comparable polyglactin sutures in these applications.
- Prolene sutures are non-absorbable monofilament polypropylene sutures commonly used for coronary artery bypass grafts and c-sections.
- Silk sutures are usually non-absorbable and offer natural options for closing incisions in general surgery, oral surgery or ophthalmic surgery procedures.
- Perma-hand sutures are a subset of silk sutures that are coated with a specialized wax mixture to make wound closure easier and faster.
CIA Medical can provide you with the widest array of Ethicon sutures to ensure that your facility and healthcare providers have the right tools for treating patients now and in the future.
Ethilon Suture Sizes
Ethilon suture sizes range from 2-0 to 11-0, with 3-0 to 6-0 the most commonly used sizes for these medical devices. Larger numbers indicate smaller suture diameters.
Ethilon Suture Suppliers
Ethilon sutures are manufactured by Ethicon, which is a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson. Established as a separate company in 1949, Ethicon is responsible for creating a wide range of medical equipment, including Ethicon sutures in a wide range of types and sizes. CIA Medical is one of the most trusted Ethilon suture suppliers for medical facilities in our service area.
