What Is an IV Pole?
An IV pole, also known as an IV bag pole or IV stand, is an important piece of equipment for infusion therapy. Typically constructed of strong metal, these stands are used to suspend or hold IV bags and other infusion supplies in place while they are being used to provide patients with vital fluids and medicines.
IV poles typically consist of a long, central pole which provides the body and length of the stand, as well as several legs at the base, which may or may not have small wheels attached to allow the IV pole to be rolled around from place to place. At the top, the IV pole usually has various hangers or hooks for IV supplies to be attached.
IV poles are used on a daily basis in hospitals and other healthcare settings around the world to aid with all sorts of IV therapy, from helping to deliver chemotherapy drugs to cancer patients to providing fluids for patients who are undergoing surgery.

How Does an IV Pole Work?
The way in which IV poles work is relatively simple. They first need to be assembled and placed in position, usually beside the head of a patient’s bed. Once the IV pole is in place, IV bags and lines can be hung from it and used to provide fluids and medications to the patient.
IV Pole Sizes
IV poles are available in a wide range of sizes. They typically tend to be quite tall, as they need to suspend IV bags quite high above the ground for the IV system to function effectively, especially when gravity IV bags are being used. Average heights for these IV poles range from around 40” tall to over 80”. In terms of diameter, they can vary from around 16” to 22”.
IV Pole Types
It's possible to divide IV poles into different categories and types, based on their design. Some IV poles have four legs at the base, for example, while 5-leg IV poles and 6-leg IV poles have additional legs for more support and maneuverability. There are also portable IV poles which have wheels on the base to let them roll around.
IV Pole Uses
IV poles are used to suspend IV bags and other pieces of IV equipment, like lines and catheters, in position beside a patient's bed. They're used in all cases when a patient may require infusion therapy, like patients who are undergoing chemotherapy or patients in surgery who require a constant supply of fluids.
