Does Needle Sizing Come From?
The standard for determining the gauge of a needle is the Birmingham wire gauge. It was originally a scale for wire sizing, but the medical community adopted it and uses it still to identify suture, catheter and needle sizes. Each particular needle gauge has an exterior diameter, an interior diameter and a wall thickness since hypodermic needles are hollow.
21g needles measure as follows:
- Outer diameter: 0.03225 in. (variation 0.00025 in.) or 0.8192 mm (variation 0.0064)
- Inner diameter: 0.02025 in. (variation 0.00075 in.) or 0.514 mm (variation 0.019 mm)
- Wall thickness: 0.00600 in. (variation 0.00025 in.) or 0.1524 mm (variation 0.0064 mm)
- Common lengths: 0.5 - 1.5 inches
The standard method for indication gauge and size of needles is: 21g x 1. That means the 21 gauge needle is 1 inch in length.
The International Organization for Standardization has designated the ISO6009 color coding for each gauge. The ISO6009 system makes the needle size easy to identify. The connector between the single-use needle and the syringe, called a Luer lock, displays the color corresponding to the needle gauge. The 21g needle has a deep green Luer lock.
