How Do They Determine the Gauge?
The Birmingham wire gauge is the standard sizing system for needle sizes, sutures, catheters and cannulas. Although it was originally a method of measurement for wire diameters, the medical community adopted the Birmingham system for its own purposes. Each needle gauge combines outer and inner diameter dimensions plus wall thickness to match a standardized scale.
25g gauge needles have the following dimensions:
- Outer diameter: 0.02025 in. (variation 0.00025 in.) or 0.5144 mm (variation 0.0064 mm)
- Inner diameter: 0.01025 in. (variation 0.00075 in.) or 0.260 mm (variation 0.019 mm)
- Wall thickness: 0.00500 in. (variation 0.00025) or 0.1270 mm (variation 0.0064 mm)
- Common lengths: 5/8 in. up to 8 in. for spinal injections
Standardized color coding helps medical staff identify the gauge of a needle on sight. Known as the ISO6009 color coding system for single-use needles, it depends upon color coding the Luer lock that connects the needle to the syringe. 25 gauge needles have an orange connector.
