How Do Medical Dressings Work?
The way in which dressings work will depend on which kind of dressing you’re using, as some of them simply provide a physical barrier over a wound, while others actively help to speed up the healing process. In general, no matter what kind of dressing is being used, it will need to be measured to the appropriate size and placed with care over the wound, covering it completely, before being stuck or secured in position.

Dressings are available in a very broad range of sizes in order to cover and protect a wide range of different wounds. There are small plasters and gauze pads for small cuts, for example, as well as much larger rolls of gauzes and bandages for bigger applications.

In the past, most medical dressings simply consisted of a piece of cloth wrapped around a wound. But in the modern world, there are lots of different types of medical dressings in use, including gauze, plastic films, bandages, gels, foams, plasters, and more. We can divide dressings into various types, such as interactive dressings which keep the wound area moist to speed up the healing process, as well as bioactive dressings which use other biological mechanisms and processes to help with healing and protection. There are also passive dressings, which simply serve to provide a clean, dry barrier around a wound while it recovers on its own.
