What Are Gauzes?
Gauze is an example of a medical or surgical dressing. It is used to cover up wounds, lacerations, or surgical sites post-surgery in order to promote healing and protect the skin or tissue while it recovers. It's one of the most commonly-used varieties of medical dressing in the world today, used daily in hospitals and clinics worldwide.
At a fundamental level, the word "gauze" refers to any kind of thin, translucent fabric with a weave structure. In the medical world, this may refer to both woven and non-woven medical gauzes made from a range of different materials, including cotton, polyester, nylon, elastic, and even rubber.
There are many varieties of medical gauzes, from wrapping gauzes that are used for securement and padding, as well as standard surgical gauzes, used to cover up wounds after an operation. Even though they may differ in terms of materials and design, all gauzes have the same basic aim of covering up wounds to help with the healing and recovery process.

How Do Gauzes Work?
Medical gauze is mainly used as a medical dressing, covering up wounds or surgical sites to allow them to heal while providing an absorbable barrier to protect them. The weave design of gauzes allows them to be very absorbent, without sticking to the skin or causing extra damage or discomfort.
Gauze Sizes
Gauzes are available in a wide range of different sizes, with varying levels of thickness and different lengths, too. They may be sold in rolls by the yard or as pre cut pads in specific sizes, like 4" x 4" gauze pads.
Gauze Types
There are multiple types of medical gauzes, and we can divide them into a range of different categories, based on their materials and design. For example, there are woven and non-woven gauzes. A woven gauze is one with a loose and open weave, helping fluids to absorb into the gauze and wick away. Non-woven gauze, meanwhile, is made up of fibers that are pressed and condensed together into a weave-like pattern, usually being stronger and thicker than woven alternatives. There are also different materials used for gauzes, including polyester, rayon, and fabric blends.
Gauze Uses
The main use of gauzes is to pack or cover a wound in order to slow down the bleeding. Gauzes are often used at the sites of accidents and emergencies, for example, to slow bleeding in someone who is injured before they can be taken to hospital. Medical gauzes are also used to help keep wounds clean while they heal, and they may be used during surgery to absorb blood, too, or as a type of dressing or bandage.
