What Is a Luer Lock Syringe?
A Luer lock syringe is a special kind of syringe that allows for a needle to be twisted onto the tip and then locked into place. This design helps to ensure that the needle will not accidentally break off or be removed while the syringe is in use, and it also prevents accidental injection of the syringe's contents.
Luer lock syringes are very different to Luer slip or non-Luer lock syringes, which allow needles to be pushed onto the tip but not to be locked in position in the same way as a Luer lock syringe.
Luer lock syringes also tend to be more expensive than Luer slip syringes and are recommended over Luer slip syringes in many situations, such as during IV therapy, attaching syringes to syringe pumps, or while preparing or administering cytotoxic drugs.
A Luer lock syringe will also usually be used during administration of medication via a central venous access device.

How Does a Luer Lock Syringe Work?
Like other syringes a Luer lock syringe consists of a central tube which stores the liquid, a plunger to control the flow of liquid in and out of the tube, graduated markings along the sides to show how much fluid is inside, and a tip. A needle can be twisted onto the tip and locked in place, and the plunger can then be used to draw out and administer fluids, as needed.

As with other types of syringes, Luer lock syringes are available in a broad range of sizes. They are measured in terms of the amount of fluid they are able to contain, usually using cubic centimeters (cc) or milliliters (ml). Common sizes range from as small as 5ml all the way up to 60ml syringes.
