What is the 22 Gauge Needle Used For?

How Is the Needle Gauge Determined?
The medical profession relies on the same size scale devised to measure wire sizing in the 17th century. It not only codifies needle sizes but also sutures and cannulas according to the Birmingham wire gauge system. Each ascending size is about 11 percent smaller in diameter than the previous gauge.
The 22 gauge needle has the following dimensions:
- Outer diameter: 0.02825 in. (variation 0.00025 in.) or 0.7176 mm (variation 0.0064 mm)
- Inner diameter: 0.01625 in. (variation 0.00075 in.) or 0.413 mm (variation 0.019 mm)
- Wall thickness: 0.00600 in. (variation 0.00025 in.) or 0.1524 mm (variation 0.0064 mm)
- Common lengths: 1 to 3.5 in.
Another way to identify the gauge of a needle, the ISO6009 color coding system sets a standard color for the Luer lock connector that attaches the needle to the syringe. Black designates 22g needles. The syringe to use with this size needle depends upon the size of the dose it has to deliver.
