What Is a Biopsy Needle?

How Does a Biopsy Needle Work?
Biopsy needles are used in needle biopsy procedures. These procedures are usually carried out in hospitals or doctor's offices. The area being tested will first need to be cleaned and may also be numbed with anesthetic prior to the insertion of the needle. The needle will then be inserted and CT scans or ultrasound may be used to guide it into position. The syringe attached to the needle will allow for a sample to be taken, before the needle is then removed and the insertion site bandaged. The sample is then sent to a lab for testing.

Like other needles, biopsy needles can be found in a broad range of sizes. Some of them need to be very long, as they have to penetrate quite deep into the body, while others are shorter for more surface-level biopsy procedures.
