What Is a Cannula? Types of Cannulas
Simply designed yet versatile, there are different types of cannulas for a variety of hospital applications, such as:
- Peripheral IV cannula is the most common cannula in hospital settings. Inserted into a small vein in the forearm, the peripheral IV cannula provides a pathway for administering medication from an IV drip.
- Midline IV cannula and IV cannulation is another form of peripheral cannulation. The entry point for a midline IV cannula is a larger vein near the elbow rather than the in the forearm. The midline IV cannula opens a pathway for the insertion of a catheter that extends to a vein in the chest. It is typically for longer-term IV intake.
- Central line IV cannulas, placed in a major vein, deliver fluids and/or medications that the patient cannot take by mouth. When long-term delivery through a peripheral vein could cause damage, the physicians insert central line IV cannulas into larger vessels, whether in the neck, chest or groin.

Sizes of Cannula
IV cannulas range in size from 26 gauge to 14 gauge, from smallest to largest. Each size is color-coded as follows to make the right selection easier in emergency situations:
- Violet: 26-gauge, infant/preemie, 0.6mm diameter
- Yellow: 24-g, infant/elderly, 0.7mm
- Blue: 22-g, child/senior, 0.9mm
- Pink: 20-g, regular adult IV, 1.1mm
- Green: 18-g, trauma victim/quick transfusion, 1.3mm
- Gray: 16-g, adult trauma/surgical procedures, 1.8mm
- Orange: 14-g, trauma/surgical, 2.4mm
The size of the cannula determines the flow rate for IV fluid transmission. For example, the flow rate of the 14-guage cannula is 240 milliliters per minute. In contrast, the 26-gauge cannula allows a flow rate of just 13 ml/min.
A cannula is a tube made of flexible material that provides a channel for medications, fluids or oxygen. The word means “little reed” in Latin, which is a good description of the device. Medical cannulas usually have a pointed, needle-like end called a trocar. It makes cannulation a one-step procedure, saving critical seconds in a medical emergency.
How Do Cannulas Work?
The trocar, located at one end of the cannula, pierces the skin to open an entry point for the flexible tube. It allows quick insertion without the need for other instruments.
When Are Cannulas Used?
A medical professional uses a cannula during a tracheotomy to keep a patient’s airway open. IV cannulas deliver fluids and medications intravenously. Other cannulas drain fluids from abscesses and injuries. A veterinarian uses a cannula to relieve gaseous bloating in sheep or cattle.
Other Cannula
A nasal cannula or oxygen cannula delivers supplemental oxygen to patients with respiratory distress. An oxygen cannula consists of a flexible tube that attaches to an oxygen tank. At the other end of the tube, a nose assembly with a pair of holes emits oxygen into the nostrils. No trocar is necessary because a nasal cannula is non-invasive.
