What Is an IV Port?

An IV port is a device which is placed under the skin of the patient and used to provide easy venous access for connecting to IV lines and catheters. These ports are usually positioned in the chest area and can be left in position for weeks, months, or even years at a time.

There are many situations in which a doctor or nurse may recommend an IV port be used in a patient. Usually, IV ports are used when patients require long-term IV therapy; instead of injecting needles and IV lines over and over, the port can simply be implanted and used for repeated access to the cardiovascular system.

These IV ports may also be used in cases when it's hard or painful for patients to have regular IV lines, like if they have very small or constricted veins. There are even some cases in which IV ports are the only way to provide certain kinds of medication, like during chemotherapy for cancer patients.

How Does an IV Port Work?

First, an insertion site for the IV port will need to be selected. Usually, this is on the right side of the chest, a couple of centimeters beneath the collar bone. The patient will first be anesthetized, but will usually stay awake for the procedure. A doctor will make two incisions around the insertion site and place the port in its position. They’ll then need to feed the catheter through the port and into the vein. After that, the doctor will need to test the IV port with a port needle and take an X-ray or other scan to ensure it's in the right place and working correctly.

IV Port Sizes

Most IV ports are quite similar in size, but they can have some slight variations. For example, pediatric IV ports for use in young patients like infants and children will need to be quite small.

IV Port Types

IV ports can differ in terms of the number of lumens, or channels, they have. Most IV ports are single-lumen, which means they only have one access point, known as the septum. There are also dual or double lumen IV ports which are triangular in shape and offer two access ports to the same vein.

IV Port Uses

The main use of an IV port is to provide convenient access to the bloodstream, without the need for repeated needles and catheter insertions. These ports are useful for patients who are undergoing extensive IV treatment, like cancer patients who need chemotherapy.

IV Port Suppliers

Some of the top suppliers of IV ports include C. R. Bard and Kawasumi Labs.
