The MIC-KEY Gastric-Jejunal Feeding Tubes are designed for pediatric and adult patients requiring simultaneous jejunal feeding and gastric decompression. Proper support is provided by utilizing multiple jejunal exit ports to improve flow and minimize clogging. The tubes are weighted and have high columnar strength to help maintain position in the jejunum, making maintenance easier for the caregiver by decreasing the need for tube repositioning. The MIC-KEY GJ Feeding Tubes are available in low-profile and conventional designs.

The MIC-KEY GJ Feeding Tubes offer multiple feeding exit ports, a jejunal port, and a gastric decompression port. The gastric and jejunal ports are clearly marked to ease with identification. About The MIC-KEY Gastric-Jejunal Feeding Tube

The AVANOS MIC-KEY Gastric-Jejunal Feeding Tube (Fig 1) provides for simultaneous gastric decompression / drainage and delivery of enteral nutrition into the distal duodenum or proximal jejunum.

The AVANOS MIC-KEY Gastric-Jejunal Feeding Tube is indicated for use in patients who cannot absorb adequate nutrition through the stomach, who have intestinal motility problems, gastric outlet obstruction, severe gastroesophageal reflux, are at risk of aspiration, or in those who have had previous esophagectomy or gastrectomy.

Mic-Key Extension Set

Use this extension set for continuous feeding. To attach the extension set, align the black line on the patient end of the extension set with black line on the feeding port of the tube. Insert the "nose" of the SECUR-LOK connector into the feeding port and rotate it one quarter turn clockwise. Open the extension set feeding port and screw the ENFit connector of the feeding set to the extension set. The extension set "swivels" with movement and allows you to change position during feeding.

Wash the extension set after every feeding with warm soapy water and rinse it thoroughly. Prompt flushing and rinsing prevents the formula from drying and building up. For hygienic and functionality reasons it's recommended to replace the MIC-KEY Extension Sets at least every 2 weeks.

Avanos 8270-14-2.5-30 Mic-Key Low-Profile Gastrostomy Feeding Tube - Indications for Use

The AVANOS MIC-KEY Gastric-Jejunal Feeding Tube is indicated for use in patients who cannot absorb adequate nutrition through the stomach, who have intestinal motility problems, gastric outlet obstruction, severe gastroesophageal reflux, are at risk of aspiration, or in those who have had previous esophagectomy or gastrectomy.

Preparation of Avanos 8270-14-2.5-30 Mic-Key Low-Profile Gastrostomy Feeding Tube

  • Select the appropriate size MIC-KEY Gastric-Jejunal Feeding Tube, remove from the package and inspect for damage.
  • Using the 6 ml Luer slip syringe contained in the kit, inflate the balloon with 5 ml sterile or distilled water through the balloon port. (Fig 1-A)
  • Remove the syringe and verify balloon integrity by gently squeezing the balloon to check for leaks. Visually inspect the balloon to verify symmetry. Symmetry may be achieved by gently rolling the balloon between the fingers. Reinsert the syringe and remove all the water from the balloon.
  • Using a 6 ml Luer slip syringe, flush water through both the gastric and jejunal ports (Fig 1-A & B) to verify patency.
  • Lubricate the distal end of the tube with water-soluble lubricant. Do Not Use Mineral Oil Or Petroleum Jelly.
  • Generously lubricate the jejunal lumen with water-soluble lubricant. Do Not Use Mineral Oil Or Petroleum Jelly.
  • Insert the introducer cannula (Fig 5) into the Jejunal port until the hub is in contact with the Jejunal feeding port and the introducer cannula is clearly visible inside the tube. The introducer cannula opens the one-way valve and protects it from damage by the guidewire.

Placement of Avanos 8270-14-2.5-30 Mic-Key Low-Profile Gastrostomy Feeding Tube

  • Select the appropriate size MIC-KEY* Gastric-Jejunal Feeding Tube and prepare according to the directions in the Tube Preparation section above.
  • Advance the distal end of the tube over the guidewire and into the stomach.
  • Rotate the AVANOS* MIC-KEY* Gastric-Jejunal Feeding Tube while advancing to facilitate passage of the tube through the pylorus and into the jejunum.
  • Advance the tube until the tip of the tube is 1015 cm beyond the Ligament of Treitz and the balloon is in the stomach.
  • Using a Luer slip syringe, inflate the balloon. Inflate the balloon with 35 ml of sterile or distilled water for pediatric sized tubes (REF numbers ending in -15, -22 or -30)
    • Caution: Do not exceed 5 ml total balloon volume. Do not use air. Do not inject contrast into the balloon. Inflate the balloon with 710 ml of sterile or distilled water for adult sized tubes (REF numbers ending in -45).
    • Caution: Do not exceed 10 ml total balloon volume. Do not use air. Do not inject contrast into the balloon.
  • Remove the guidewire through the introducer cannula while holding the cannula in position.
  • Remove the introducer cannula.
  • Verify proper tube placement according to Verify Tube Position section above.

Avanos 8270-14-2.5-30 Mic-Key Low-Profile Gastrostomy Feeding Tube Patency Guidelines

  • Proper tube flushing is the best way to avoid clogging and maintain tube patency. The following are guidelines to avoid clogging and maintain tube patency.
  • Flush the feeding tube with water every 46 hours during continuous feeding, anytime the feeding is interrupted, before and after every intermittent feeding, or at least every 8 hours if the tube is not being used.
  • Flush the feeding tube before and after medication administration and between medications. This will prevent the medication from interacting with formula and potentially causing the tube to clog.
  • Use liquid medication when possible and consult the pharmacist to determine if it is safe to crush solid medication and to mix with water. If safe, pulverize the solid medication into a fine powder form and dissolve the powder in warm water before administering through the feeding tube. Never crush enteric-coated medication or mix medication with formula.
  • Avoid using acidic irrigants such as cranberry juice and cola beverages to flush feeding tubes as the acidic quality when combined with formula proteins may actually contribute to tube clogging.

Avanos Mic-Key Low-Profile Gastrostomy Feeding Tube Occlusion

Tube occlusion is generally caused by:

  • Poor flushing techniques
  • Failure to flush after measurement of gastric residuals
  • Inappropriate administration of medication
  • Pill fragments
  • Viscous medications
  • Thick formulas, such as concentrated or enriched formulas that are generally thicker and more likely to obstruct tubes
  • Formula contamination that leads to coagulation
  • Reflux of gastric or intestinal contents up the tube

To Unclog A Tube

  • Make sure that the feeding tube is not kinked or clamped off.
  • If the clog is visible above the skin surface, gently massage or milk the tube between fingers to break up the clog.
  • Next, place an enteral feeding syringe filled with warm water into the appropriate Extension Set with ENFIT Connections and gently pull back on then depress the plunger to dislodge the clog.
  • If the clog remains, repeat step #3. Gentle suction alternating with syringe pressure will relieve most obstructions.
  • If this fails, consult with the physician. Do not use cranberry juice, cola drinks, meat tenderizer or chymotrypsin, as they can actually cause clogs or create adverse reactions in some patients. If the clog is stubborn and cannot be removed, the tube will have to be replaced.

Extension Set Assembly for Jejunal Feeding

  • Open the jejunal port cover (Fig 1-C) located at the top of the MIC-KEY Gastric-Jejunal Feeding Tube.
  • Insert the MIC-KEY Continuous Feed Extension Set with ENFit Connectors by aligning the black line on the SECUR-LOK connector (Fig 2-A) with the black line on the MIC-KEY Jejunal port (Fig 1-B)
  • Lock into place by pushing in and rotating the SECUR-LOK connector (Fig 2-A) CLOCKWISE until a slight resistance is felt (approximately 1/4 of a turn).
    • Caution: DO NOT rotate the connector past the stop point.
  • To remove the Extension Set, rotate it COUNTER CLOCKWISE until the black line on SECUR-LOK connector (Fig 2-A) aligns with the black line on the MIC-KEY Jejunal port (Fig 1-B).
  • Remove the set and cap the gastric and jejunal ports with the attached port cover.
    • Caution: Never connect the jejunal port to suction. Do not measure residuals from the jejunal port.

Extension Set Assembly for Gastric Decompression

  • Open the Gastric port cover (Fig 1-C) located at the top of the MIC-KEY Gastric-Jejunal Feeding Tube.
  • Insert the MIC-KEY Bolus Feed Extension Set with ENFit Connectors by aligning the black line on the SECUR-LOK connector (Fig 3-A) with the black line on the MIC-KEY Gastric port (Fig 1-D).
  • Lock into place by pushing in and rotating the SECUR-LOK connector (Fig 3-A) CLOCKWISE until a slight resistance is felt (approximately 1/4 of a turn). Caution: DO NOT rotate the connector past the stop point.
  • To remove the Extension Set, rotate it COUNTER CLOCKWISE until the black line on SECUR-LOK connector (Fig 3-A) aligns with the black line on the MIC-KEY Gastric port (Fig 1-D).
  • Remove the set and cap the gastric and jejunal ports with the attached port cover.
    • Caution: Do not use continuous or high intermittent suctions. High pressure could collapse the tube or injure the stomach tissue and cause bleeding

MRI Safety Information

Non-clinical testing has demonstrated the Low-Profile (MIC-KEY*) Enteral Feeding Tube System is MR Conditional. A patient with this device can be safely scanned in an MR system meeting the following conditions:

  • Static magnetic field of 1.5 Tesla or 3 Tesla;
  • Maximum spatial field gradient of 1,960 G/cm (19.6 T/m) or less.
  • Maximum MR system reported, whole body averaged specific absorption rate (SAR) of < 2 W/kg (Normal Operating Mode).
MRI-related heating: Under the scan conditions defined above, the LowProfile (MIC-KEY) Tube System is expected to produce a maximum temperature rise of less than 1.3 degree celcius after 15 minutes of continuous scanning.
