Intended Use

The Pleural/Pneumopericardial Drainage Set is intended for evacuation of air from the pericardial sac or drainage of air or fluid from the pleural space.

Precautions

This product is intended for use by physicians trained and experienced in pleural and pneumopericardial drainage techniques. Standard techniques for pleural/pericardial access should be employed.

Instructions for Use

  • Insert the catheter through the Peel-Away straightener to straighten the pigtail.
  • Insert the introducer needle through the catheter until the needle tip is just beyond the catheter tip. Attach the provided syringe to the needle hub.
  • Remove the Peel-Away straightener by pulling the wings apart.
  • Prep and drape the access site in standard fashion.
NOTE: The suggested access site for pneumopericardial drainage is at the left xiphocostal margin. The suggested access site for pleural drainage is the fourth intercostal space at the anterior or mid-axillary line.
  • Infiltrate the area with local anesthetic. If needed, make a small incision with a scalpel.
  • Direct the tip of the needle/catheter assembly toward the desired catheter placement and insert the assembly under the skin. If pericardium is the target, the metal shaft of the needle should be connected to the "V" lead of a surface ECG and a stable tracing from this lead should be recorded.
NOTE: The ECG waveform should be monitored throughout the placement procedure for arrythmias indicating needle contact with myocardial tissue.
  • Gently advance the needle/catheter assembly into the positive pressure area.
  • Verify placement into the pleural or pericardial space by aspiration of air or fluid into the syringe.
  • Holding the needle stationary, advance the catheter slightly (approximately 2-3 cm).
  • Holding the catheter stationary, withdraw the introducer needle. Remove the syringe from the needle and attach it to the catheter hub. Re-confirm correct catheter placement by aspiration of air or fluid into the syringe.
  • Remove the syringe and attach the multipurpose tubing adapter to the catheter.
