Product Description

Covidien 8886234553 - SUTURE, STEEL, 18", 2-0, GS-21 HOSPITAL DIR, 12/BX

Covidien 8886234553 Suture, Conventional Cutting, Size 2-0, 5x18", Needle GS-21, 1/2 Circle, Stainless Steel (Pack of 12)

Stainless Steel sutures are composed of 316L Stainless Steel conforming to ASTM Standard F138 Grade 2 "Stainless Steel bar and wire for surgical implants". Steel sutures meet all requirements established by the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) and for nonabsorbable surgical sutures. Steel sutures are for use in abdominal wound closure, intestinal anastomosis, hernia repair and sternal closure. Steel sutures are the most inert among all suture materials and provide maximum tensile strength.

Features and Benefits

  • Roto-Grip Needles (available on some monofilament steel) are designed to reduce kinking.
  • Very low tissue reaction
  • High, unchanging tensile strength
  • No wick effect
  • No stretch

Frequent Uses

  • Soft tissue approximation
  • Ophthalmic
  • Cardiovascular
  • Neurological surgery

Indications

Steel sutures are indicated for use in abdominal wound closure, intestinal anastomosis, hernia repair and sternal closure.

Contraindications

The use of this suture is contraindicated in patients with known sensitivities or allergies to steel and/or its principal metallic components, chromium and nickel. Additionally, the presence of steel may interfere with certain radiodiagnostics and its use is contraindicated where radiotransparency of suture material is required.

Actions

SURGILON braided nylon sutures elicit a minimal acute inflammatory reaction in tissue, which is followed by gradual encapsulation of the suture by fibrous connective tissue.

Tensile Strength

As with any nylon suture, though not absorbed, progressive hydrolysis of the suture in vivo may result in gradual loss of its tensile strength over time.

Sterilization

SURGILONTM braided nylon sutures are sterilized by ethylene oxide in sizes 6-0 (0.7 metric) and smaller and by gamma irradiation in sizes 2 (5 metric) through 5-0 (1 metric).

Packaging

SURGILON braided nylon sutures are available dyed (white or black with Logwood extract), in USP and EP sizes 2 (5 metric) through 7-0 (0.5 metric). The sutures are supplied sterile, in pre-cut lengths, ligating reels, non-needled or affixed to needles using both permanent and removable needle attachment techniques; in one, two and three dozen box quantities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions: How does the USP size of steel suture correspond to the gauge of steel?
Answer:
When a customer refers to a "gauge" they are referring to the Brown and Sharpe (BS) gauge of steel. The following BS gauge correlates to USP size.

  • BS 18 = USP 7
  • BS 19 = USP 6
  • BS 20 = USP 5
  • BS 22 = USP 4
  • BS 23 = USP 3
  • BS 24 = USP 2
  • BS 25 = USP 1
  • BS 26 = USP 0
  • BS 28 = USP 2-0
  • BS 30 = USP 3-0
  • BS 32 & 34 = USP 4-0
  • BS 35 = USP 5-0
Questions: If a steel suture was used on a patient, can the patient be given an MRI?
Answer:
Stainless steel sutures are compatible with MRI/NMR procedures having static magnetic fields of 3.0 Tesla or less - however, there may be some slight image distortion.
