DVT: A Preventable Problem

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) includes deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). All are major public health problems in the United States. Deep vein thrombosis occurs when a blood clot forms in a large vein, often in the leg. Part of a clot may break off and travel to the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism and possibly death.

DVT and PE are serious, often under diagnosed, but preventable medical conditions. It is important to know about VTE because it can happen to anybody at any age.

Prevention is preferable to treatment. When at-risk patients for thromboembolism are identified, doctors look at two potential prophylactic measures: anti-coagulation medications and mechanical methods such as lower limb compression.1

DVT and its consequences:

  • Pervasive 2 million Americans have DVT/PE annually, 600,000 hospitalized and as many as 300,000 may die.
  • Deadly More deaths than AIDS, breast cancer, and traffic accidents combined.
  • Common More people suffer from DVT annually than either heart attack or stroke.
  • Predictable Up to 60% of patients for hip replacement without prophylaxis may expect to develop DVT.
  • Undertreated A multi-center study showed only about a third of at-risk patients received VTE preventive care.
  • Cruel Cancer patients have 2x the DVT risk and 3x the fatal PE risk of non-cancer patients for the same surgery.
  • Tragic PE is the leading cause of maternal death in childbirth. Pregnancy increases DVT risk by a factor of six.

Hemo-Force Sequential Sleeves

Comfortable and Easy to Apply for Enhanced Compliance

Poor patient compliance is a leading obstacle to DVT prophylaxis. Patient complaints include sweating, itching and discomfort from too tight sleeves7 or uncomfortable material. Medline DVT sleeves have thoughtful features that maximize patient comfort and caregiver efficiency.

  • Soft breathable lining, rounded edges, added padding to cushion the tubing exit point and a unique hose angle make the sleeves exceptionally comfortable.
  • Size markings, application instructions and illustrations are printed right on the sleeve, providing just-in-time guidance for appropriate clinical use.

Medline air compression sleeves fit the precise clinical need for patients of all sizes. For extra comfort, the sleeves are lined with tricot, a soft and breathable knit material often found in lingerie. The extra comfort helps promote patient compliance that can be low with some competitive products that are made of plastic and hot to wear
