What is an Adson Forceps?
This is a type of thumb forceps also known as surgical tweezers. These forceps are made of stainless steel and used to grasp, hold and move tissue. This design enables the doctor to have high precision in tissue manipulation and it helps prevent tissue damage. This type of forceps can be either toothed or smooth. The toothed forceps are designed with two fine teeth on the inside part of one tip and a single tooth on the other tip that connects with the two teeth allowing the forceps to tightly grasp tissue. This version of forceps is also known as rat-tooth tissue.
Non-toothed forceps are designed with fine, serrated teeth on the inside part of both ends that enables for manipulation of tissue without hurting it. Adson forceps are used in surgeries, and they are commonly used in ophthalmic surgeries, due to their delicate design.
Adson forceps were named after the surgeon who dedicated his life to enhancing surgical techniques and instruments resulting in the creation of the Adson forceps, the Adson-Graeff forceps and the Beckman-Adson retractor.
