What is a Cystoscopy Irrigation Set?
Irrigation is the procedure of washing out the bladder using an irrigation system often called a bladder irrigation set. This procedure can be done in several clinical situations. In some cases, it is performed on catheterized patients, so the bladder is irrigated and washed with sterile fluid to remove and prevent blood clots in the bladder.
Blood clots can prevent urine from going freely through the catheter, causing it to be clogged. Patients who have catheters complain of pain when urine starts gathering in the bladder unable to properly exit the body. This procedure can also be performed after prostate or bladder surgery. Treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation can cause blood clots in the bladder.

Cystoscopy Irrigation Procedure
- A catheter is inserted inside the patient’s bladder. The catheter has holes that are large enough to allow blood clots to pass through. At the end of the catheter, there are 3 tubes.
- The first tube is connected to the drainage bag. Second tube is used to inflate the balloon that sustains the catheter in position.
- Finally, the third tube is attached to the tubing that connects into 2 bags of saline solution. The saline water hangs from the IV pole.
- The tubing is often linked to a pump so that it can be controlled. The clamp for the first bag will be open until the bag is empty. The clamp will be closed, and the second bag will be opened. While the second bag flows, the first bag will be replaced.
