What Is a Texas Catheter?
A Texas catheter, which can also be known as a male external catheter or condom catheter, is a special kind of catheter that is used externally, rather than being inserted into the body via the urethra or other openings. It is intended for use with male patients only.
Texas catheters consist of a condom-like head or funnel piece which is placed over the glans of the penis to collect urine as it leaves the body. This piece is connected to a long, semi-flexible tube, through which urine flows, and the tube leads to a bag or receptacle of some kind for urine to collect.
A Texas catheter may be preferred by many patients, due to the fact that it does not need to be inserted into the patient’s urethra. This makes it much more comfortable and less painful for people to use. However, it can only be used in certain situations and is not a viable option when patients are dealing with urethra blockages, urinary retention, and various other conditions.

How Does a Texas Catheter Work?
The way in which Texas catheters work is very simple. The head or funnel piece of the catheter is placed around the end or glans of the penis so that the urethra is covered. The catheter can then be connected to a receptacle of some kind, like a urinary bag. Urine can then flow naturally through the urethra, out of the penis, and into the catheter. It flows along the tube and is diverted into the receptacle, which can be emptied and disposed of or reused, as needed. Once the user is finished with the catheter, it can easily be removed.
Texas Catheter Sizes
There are various different sizes of Texas catheters in order to be suitable for different patients. When using a Texas catheter, it's imperative that the main head part of the catheter fits snugly around the end of the penis without being too tight or too loose, so sizing is very important to take into account for this specific kind of external catheter.
Texas Catheter Types
There’s only really one type of Texas catheter, as these catheters are very specific in terms of their design and intended use. They may vary slightly in terms of size, but all are designed according to a very similar set of specifications.
Texas Catheter Uses
As a type of external urinary catheter, Texas catheters are most commonly used for people who are able to pass urine naturally but may have difficulties controlling their urination or being able to use toilets. People with incontinence may be recommended to use these catheters, for example, as well as those with mobility issues that make it hard to use the toilet.
