What Is an Ostomy Pouch?
An ostomy pouch, which may also be referred to under other names like colostomy bag, ostomy bag, or stoma bag, is a small, waterproof pouch that is used to collect waste materials from the body after a colostomy procedure.
During a colostomy, an opening is made in between the large intestine and the abdominal wall. This is known as an ostomy or stoma, and it's used to funnel waste products out of the body without them having to continue through into the colon. The ostomy pouch is the container for these waste materials.
Ostomy bags or pouches are available in various sizes to suit patients with different needs. They are reusable and can be emptied and then reattached to the body as required, but will need to be disposed of and replaced every now and then (usually once a week). How Does an Ostomy Pouch Work?
The way in which ostomy pouches work is very simple. They're placed around the stoma so that waste products can drain directly into them. When full, they can be removed, emptied, and then reattached. They consist of two main pieces: the flange and the pouch. The flange is the part that sticks to the skin and needs to be changed quite regularly (daily), while the pouch is what stores the waste.
Ostomy Pouch Sizes
There are various different sizes of ostomy pouches to suit patients of different ages and needs. Smaller pouches may be useful for pediatric patients and are more discreet, but will hold less waste and have to be emptied more often. Larger pouches have greater capacity.
Ostomy Pouch Types
