Angiocatheters, also referred to as angiocaths, are an important tool for medical practitioners in both diagnostic and therapeutic applications. Choosing the right angiocaths is essential to ensure the best patient care for individuals with certain cardiac conditions and those who require multiple IV fluids through a single delivery point.
What Is an Angiocatheter?
Angiocaths are defined as thin hollow tubes that allow the introduction of contrast dyes into various areas of the body for diagnostic purposes. The Mayo Clinic notes that angiographic catheters are used to perform angiograms, a procedure recommended by the American Heart Association as a diagnostic tool that allows cardiologists to collect more complete and direct information about blood flow and blood pressure inside the heart. The Emergency Medicine Residents' Association (EMRA) also recommends the use of angiocatheter tools in placing central lines for delivering multiple IV fluids and for drawing blood.

How Does an Angiocatheter Work?
The angiocatheter is inserted through a small, precisely placed incision that goes through the surface of the skin and into a vein. This incision is usually made using a specialized needle to which the angiocath is attached. When the needle has reached the appropriate placement on the vein, the catheter slides down the shaft of the needle and creates a conduit through which blood can safely be withdrawn and diagnostic dyes can be introduced. This allows medical professionals, including radiologists, to perform important tests and to assess patient conditions more easily and with fewer painful needle sticks during treatment.

Videos About Angiocaths
Several helpful videos about angiographic catheters and other catheter devices are available online. These two videos are especially useful for patients and their caregivers.
- B. Braun Medical has created a video describing the way in which the Introcan Safety® IV Catheter can be used in the medical setting. This video is a good introduction to the way in which angiocath devices work.
- A video produced by RadiologyInfo.org provides detailed patient information about catheter angiography and how it is used to diagnose aneurysms and plaques and to repair these issues prior to or instead of surgery.
